![]() ![]() Words which mean one thing in Greek or Hebrew have been given entirely different meanings by interpreters, sometimes out of ignorance, and sometimes out of plan. Some have been simply forgeries, inserted for political and social reasons. Verses have been added, removed, and modified to alter their meaning. But which Bible? There are many different Bibles which contain different books within, and the several differing translations of those books has changed their content over the centuries. In 2010 the Church published 364,000 copies of the Latter-day Saint edition of the King James Bible.To some, the Bible is the infallible and unchangeable word of God, written by Him and eternally sacrosanct. Based on the doctrinal clarity of latter-day revelation given to the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Church has held to the King James Version as being doctrinally more accurate than recent versions. Today, English-speaking Church members use the Latter-day Saint edition of the King James Version of the Bible. As he prayed in a grove of trees, God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to him. Young Joseph Smith sought guidance in his King James Bible and found it in James 1:5, which says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, … and it shall be given him.” He believed. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:1–3). And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. “If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing” ( 1 Corinthians 13:1–3). “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. The New International Reader’s Version of the Bible The King James Bible is regarded by many to be the most beautiful English language version because of its lyrical quality, which seems to speak to the heart and spirit. The original copies of the King James Bible were 16″ x 11″ (40.6 cm x 28 cm) and weighed 30 pounds (13.6 kg). Richard Bancroft reviewed the final revision and made only 14 changes. Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson oversaw the final revision of the King James Bible. Only three of these twelve translators have been identified. This process took four years.ġ Chronicles– Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomonįollowing this initial translation work, two translators from each of the six companies spent nine months at Stationers’ Hall in London reviewing the work. After translators of each company completed their assignment, they passed it on to the next company, so that all companies reviewed the entire Bible. Bancroft wrote 15 general rules to guide them. They worked on unbound pages from the 1602 revision of the Bishops’ Bible. King James asked Bishop Richard Bancroft (above) to oversee six companies of translators at three locations. ![]()
